Slaten journalismikriitikkonakin työskentelevä Jack Shafer on vihainen mies. Viimeksi häntä vitutti The 9/11 Anniversary Racket, eli tiedotusvälineiden tapa muistella menneitä.

Ongelma on Schaferin mielestä siinä, että:

the anniversary article makes no attempt to advance the story or deepen the collective understanding of the selected anniversary event.

Erityisesti häntä hiertää outo kiintymys kymmen- ja viisivuotismuisteloihin, ikään kuin niillä vuosilla olisi enemmän väliä kuin 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 6-, 7-, 8- tai 9-vuotispäivillä:

The hollowness of the anniversary story is revealed in the press corps’ arbitrary embrace of anniversaries ending in zero or five—as if some numerology-inducing worm has eaten a hole in their brains. Why will the 50th anniversary of the shoot-down of Gary Powers’ U-2, coming in May 2010, be treated as more newsworthy than the 49th anniversary, which just passed?

Publishers love the self-valentines because they make the anniversary issue a ”destination” for advertisers—much easier to sell than the crap that’s published the rest of the year. Editors love the ”looking back on our rich history”-quality of milestone mags because nobody can say no to onanism.
